One language, many voices - not the name of this years worst X-factor group.....

The British Library is preparing to launch an exhibition called 'Evolving English: One Language, Many Voices'. Linguists within the British Library say pronunciation is a matter of fashion and are asking the public to help it track how pronunciation is shifting in Britain, as our language evolves.

Volunteers are being asked to record a chapter from the Mr Men book Mr Tickle, to see how certain words and accents have changed over time. The British Library wants as many people as possible to record the opening paragraphs of children's book Mr Tickle to track differences in vowel sounds. It says youngsters are now more likely to say "haitch" than "aitch" when pronouncing the letter H.

When saying the word "mischievous", they prefer to pronounce it "mischeevy-us" rather than "mischivus", curators add. Youg people are also more likely to have different way of saying words such as garage, schedule, migraine and harass.

'The concise Oxford dictionary of current English.' can be found in Avril and Aldham LRCs class number 423 con

What time is it? No it's not Chico time, its....Maritime

On 13 October 1884 Greenwich, in London was established as the Universal Time meridian of longitude - from which all World time zones are based. There are an infinite number of possible meridians, and any one of these could have been chosen. However, the Greenwich Meridian was pre-eminent because it had already been adopted by both the UK and USA and was therefore being used by 72% of the world's shipping.

Find books on longitude in Mathematical Geography 526.

National Poetry Day - the prose and cons

It's National Poetry Day today, why not take out a book from our poetry section, sit in the gardens and relax with some rhyming couplets?

Books on poetry are in the 821. class, so why not ponder for a moment and think.....shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Our personal favourite (seeing as the theme for this year's poetry day is 'Home') is 821.914 CUR 'Three songs of Home' by Tony Curtis
